Lifestylopathy: The New Wellness Term You Should Know

Morning Rituals and Small Choices

As I stretch on my yoga mat at 8 a.m. this morning, tired from an evening of socialising, it can be difficult to find motivation. It is easy to think that this small moment is insignificant. Perhaps you decide to skip that pain au chocolat at the bakery because you remember pastries are highly processed. Or maybe when you buy vegetables from the supermarket, you take the extra time to wash them properly because pesticides are a concern. These small moments may feel minor, but cumulatively, they shape your lifestyle.

Understanding the Exposome

In a previous article, I discussed the exposome, a relatively new concept in science that captures the totality of everything your body experiencesโ€”what you eat, what you are exposed to, and how your environment shapes your health 1 Wild, C.P., 2012. The Exposome: From Concept to Utility. Environmental Health Perspectives, 120(5), pp.470โ€“478. Available at: https://ehp.niehs.nih.gov/doi/full/10.1289/ehp.1104500 [Accessed 18 August 2025] . These small choices, repeated over time, contribute to your unique exposome.

Each of these choices could influence long-term wellbeing through gentle, mindful lifestyle changes.

Introducing Lifestylopathy

Once you have reflected on your exposome, you might want actionable steps to improve it. That is where the concept of Lifestylopathy comes in. The concept of Lifestylopathy, introduced by researcher Jawad Alzeer, offers a holistic framework 2 Alzeer, J., 2025. Personalized Health Through Epigenetics: The Lifestylopathy Approach. ResearchGate. Available at: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/378714528_Lifestylopathy_A_Holistic_Approach_to_Healthcare [Accessed 18 August 2025] . It recognises that there are ways to restore balance through improving nutrition, sleep, exercise, and stress management. Complementary practices, such as yoga, massage, and aromatherapy, may also support overall wellbeing. Lifestylopathy highlights that some activities deplete our reserves, while others replenish them, promoting harmony and resilience.

Balancing Body and Mind

Through Lifestylopathy, we see that cultivating balance is about more than diet or exercise alone. It is about honoring our circadian rhythms, building restorative sleep rituals, moving our bodies joyfully, and managing stress 3 Alzeer, 2025. Available at: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/378714528_Lifestylopathy_A_Holistic_Approach_to_Healthcare[Accessed 18 August 2025] . Small, intentional actions accumulate over time to enhance our vitality, resilience, and overall health.

The Science of Kindness

One intriguing finding from Lifestylopathy research is the role of acts of kindness, community service, and generosity in supporting health. Engaging in altruistic behaviors has been linked to lower stress, improved immune function, better cardiovascular health, and enhanced emotional wellbeing 4 Post, S.G., 2005. Altruism, Happiness, and Health: Itโ€™s Good to Be Good. International Journal of Behavioral Medicine, 12(2), pp.66โ€“77. Available at: https://link.springer.com/article/10.1207/s15327558ijbm1202_4 [Accessed 18 August 2025]; Brown, S.L., Nesse, R.M., Vinokur, A.D. and Smith, D.M., 2003. Providing Social Support May Be More Beneficial Than Receiving It: Results From a Prospective Study of Mortality. Psychological Science, 14(4), pp.320โ€“327. Available at: https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1111/1467-9280.01441 [Accessed 18 August 2025] . Simple acts of kindness can even trigger the release of oxytocin, sometimes called the โ€œbonding hormone,โ€ which can lower blood pressure and improve heart health 5 Miller, G.E., Chen, E. and Cole, S.W., 2009. Health Psychology: Developing Biopsychosocial Approaches to Health. Current Directions in Psychological Science, 18(1), pp.57โ€“61. Available at: https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1111/j.1467-8721.2009.01614.x [Accessed 18 August 2025 ; 6 Seligman, M.E.P., Steen, T.A., Park, N. and Peterson, C., 2005. Positive Psychology Progress: Empirical Validation of Interventions. American Psychologist, 60(5), pp.410โ€“421. Available at: https://psycnet.apa.org/record/2005-09241-004 [Accessed 18 August 2025] .

Holistic Health in Action

Increasingly, the scientific and medical community is recognizing the value of holistic health. If research suggests that only around 10% of chronic illnesses may be primarily genetic, while lifestyle accounts for much of the rest, then focusing on our lifestylopathy, our daily habits, choices, and acts of service, becomes essential 7. Alzeer, 2025. Available at: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/378714528_Lifestylopathy_A_Holistic_Approach_to_Healthcare [Accessed 18 August 2025] . This approach is not about replacing conventional medicine but about personalising care and living well for as long as possible.

Your Lifestylopathy Journey

Small, mindful decisionsโ€”like nourishing your body, honoring your rhythms, and showing kindnessโ€”can add up to a profound impact on your health. Recognizing which habits build your reserves and which deplete them is a powerful tool in creating a life of balance and vitality.

Looking Ahead: Kindness and Wellbeing

As we become more attuned to ourย lifestylopathy, we can see how small, mindful choices, such as caring for our bodies and honouring our circadian rhythms, quietly support our overall health and create a sense of alignment and wellbeing in everyday life. In another reflection, I hope to gently explore how acts of kindness and giving can weave into these daily rituals, supporting our health in ways that research shows are meaningful and uplifting.
