The Exposome: Your Lifetime Diary of Wellness

Discovering The Exposome

Recently, I invested in an air purifier to help with seasonal allergies, and the change has been subtle but profound. It reminded me of how deeply our environment shapes our wellbeing, often in ways we don’t notice until we act. Around the same time, I came across a term that feels perfectly aligned with chrononutrition, and the gentle rhythms of feminine wellness: the exposome.

What is the Exposome?

The exposome, a concept coined by Dr Christopher Wild, is essentially our life diary. It records everything our bodies have ever been exposed to 1 Wild, C.P., 2005. Complementing the genome with an ‘exposome’: the outstanding challenge of environmental exposure measurement in molecular epidemiology. Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, 14(8), pp.1847–1850. https://doi.org/10.1158/1055-9965.EPI-05-0456. . This includes the food we eat, the air we breathe, chemicals and pollutants, stress, sleep, exercise, relationships, sunlight, noise, microbes, heavy metals, and pesticides. These exposures interact with our genes and can influence the likelihood of developing certain diseases. Current estimates suggest that lifestyle and environmental factors may play a greater role than genetics in shaping long-term health outcomes 2 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 2022. From the genome to the exposome: Mapping causal associations between environmental factors and population health. Genomics and Precision Public Health Blog. Layers of Our Life Diary

The exposome can be divided into internal factors, like hormones and metabolism; general external factors, such as living in an urban or rural environment; and specific exposures, including what we eat, drink, and apply to our skin 3 Zhang, H., et al., 2020. Semantic standards of external exposome data. Environmental International, 146, p.106285. Available at: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.envint.2020.106285 [Accessed 18 Oct. 2025]. . (Zhang et al., 2020). Our genetic code may be fixed, but our daily environment interacts with it in a dynamic way, offering opportunities to guide our health toward vitality rather than disease.

In my own life, I try to nurture a supportive exposome through small, mindful choices. I practice Pilates to keep my body strong and aligned. I step outside in the morning before 10 a.m. and again after 5 p.m. to enjoy sunlight when UV exposure is gentler. At home, my air purifier helps reduce dust and pollutants, and I choose natural cleaning products, such as those from Norfolk Natural Living, along with more natural makeup. I’m also gradually replacing my wardrobe with natural, organic materials like linen and GOTS-certified organic cotton. It’s an ongoing process, and I’ve found it challenging because many of the clothes I love aren’t made from these fabrics, but each small swap for me feels like a step toward greater alignment with my body and environment.

Sunlight as a Messenger

One fascinating aspect of the exposome is the role of vitamin D. Vitamin D supports more than just our bones; it acts as a molecular switch for many genes, turning them on or off in response to environmental cues 4 Haussler, M.R., et al., 2013. Molecular mechanisms of vitamin D action. The Journal of Clinical Investigation, 123(6), pp.2518–2529. Available at: https://doi.org/10.1172/JCI67260 [Accessed 18 Oct. 2025]. . Maintaining healthy vitamin D levels through safe sunlight, diet, and mindful supplementation may support gene expression and overall wellbeing, though outcomes differ among individuals.

Aiming for steady, healthy vitamin D through safe sunlight, nourishing foods, and mindful supplementation is one of the simplest ways to support our genes and long-term health. Early-life sun exposure may influence vitamin D metabolism later in life, though individual results vary 5 Haussler, M.R., et al., 2013. Molecular mechanisms of vitamin D action. The Journal of Clinical Investigation, 123(6), pp.2518–2529. Available at: https://doi.org/10.1172/JCI67260 [Accessed 18 Oct. 2025]. .

Nurturing Our Exposome Through Daily Rituals

Supporting a healthy exposome doesn’t have to feel like a chore. It’s about creating daily practices that bring balance and alignment. Reducing toxic exposures at home, eating clean foods low in pesticides, getting restorative sleep, moving the body regularly, managing stress, and spending time in nature are all ways to care for ourselves and our environment. Each small choice, from choosing organic cotton to breathing fresh air filtered by a purifier, contributes to a life in rhythm with our natural cycles.

Living in Alignment

The science of the exposome is still emerging. Research into the exposome is still evolving, and while early findings are fascinating, more studies are needed to understand the full picture. Still, one truth is clear: our health is shaped more by the interactions between our bodies and our environment than by just fixed genetics. By tending to daily practices that support balance, alignment, and mindful living, fostering a sense of balance and mindful living in daily routines.
